In Remembrance of Barney
DALLAS (2/1/2013) --- The staff at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is saddened by the loss of the Bush family's much-loved pet, Barney.
For twelve years, Barney lived an exciting life. The Scottish Terrier joined the Bush family after the Presidential election in 2000, as a gift from President George W. Bush to Mrs. Laura Bush. Barney greeted visitors at the White House; he loved to play with his soccer balls and volleyballs on the South Lawn; and he accompanied the First Family aboard Air Force One.
Barney quickly captured the hearts of millions in America and around the world. There was so much demand for information about him that the White House devoted a full section of its website to Barney.gov. It can still be visited today in its archived form that includes biographical information, photo galleries, and kids' games. Barney starred in the "Barney Cam" videos which are also available for viewing.
In a statement released this afternoon, President Bush said of Barney, "Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal."
Barney enjoys a sunrise walk on the beach while visiting Sea Island, GA, June 8, 2004.
